Venturing

My gaze ventures towards the horizon.

The windshield frames my immediate future.

What lies beyond, I will soon see,

What lies behind, I already miss.

The orchestration is meditative –

The gentle hum of the engine, the steady rhythm of the tires against the hot pavement, the intermittent whoosh of a passing vehicle.

My mind wanders towards the recent past.

The memories tantalize my impressions.

What was really happening when, I try to piece it together

What would have happened if, I will never know.

The sudden shift in weather brings me back to the present –

The torrent of precipitation belting its glorious song of quenching, the mighty thunder comping marcato beats, the presto wipers attempting to keep the wild improvisers in time.

I continually steer my mind back to now

The mind focusing on the current

What is happening now, I see

What is happening now, I feel

The rainfall slows to a quiet drizzle

Thin rays of light reach through the grey

My gaze ventures towards the horizon.
